App Ideas

THE IDEA
"A Pew Research Center survey found that people age 18-34 are consistently less knowledgeable about current events than their elders. On a current events quiz, young adults averaged 5.9 correct answers out of 12 questions, fewer that the averages for Americans ages 35 to 49 (7.8) and above age 50 (8.4)" (Rogers, 2017).

I believe that reading news is important. Not only does it make us aware of the present moment and current issues, reading offers multiple benefits such as enhancing vocabularies, added knowledge and better focus and concentration. However, most youngsters these days spend more time in social media, youtube and all those digital distractions rather than feeding themselves with news that matter more.

This is a problem I also face. Even though I realise the importance of reading news, I just find it hard to retain my focus when I find the news boring or hard to comprehend (never understood those political ones). At the end of the day I spend more time reading more trivial, entertainment type of contents like celeb news, viral stuffs, and occasional crimes.

Having acknowledged this problem, I would like to create a news app for people who doesn't like reading, especially youngsters, but wishes to know more about the world. I'd like to reinvent reading news as something more exciting, not an act of boredom.

OTHER IDEAS
-App that ease the process of splitting bills
-An app for buddhist... never encountered a good one... (but I don't have too much knowledge about the religion)
-travel app (improved)
-app for training ears to hear chords, perfect pitch (for musicians)
-to do list apps, goals app, productivity apps ???
-conversation starters
-solve the problem, people these days play with their phone a lot even tho they're hanging out with a group of friends (?)
-an app that's useful for students... what.
-meal prep app

Final App Idea (Mealprep App)

Meal prepping is basically cooking in batch ahead of time, so instead of having to cook everyday, you just have to cook the week's meal in one or two days and reheat the food when it's to be eaten. The benefits of meal prepping include :
  1. Healthy Eating
  2. Reduce risk of gaining weight
  3. Less eating out
  4. Saves time
  5. Saves Money
  6. Help achieve fitness goals
However, meal prepping can be quite a hassle as you're doing a week's worth of work in one day. Which means there will be lots of grocery to shop, many ingredients to cut and lots of multitasking involved. Choosing recipes for a healthy balanced meal is also important and sometimes people fail to do that. Overall there's a lot to meal prepping that have to be mastered. A proper knowledge of food storage, calculating macros and tips to create variation in the food prepared is essential. Which is why it can be daunting especially for beginners.

At first I chose this app idea because I couldn't find an existing meal prep yet. However, I eventually I came upon Kevin Curry's app called MealPrep Pro of which I then made a case study on.

Case Study

GOOD:
  1. I like how the meal prep time is provided.
  2. A default meal plan is preset once you start using the app. It saves time (you don’t have to browse through recipe right away)
  3. plan based on your macros.
  4. Eating out option. The app is quite flexible. You can also add your own recipe (though it will be a bit of a hassle coz you need to compute the macros and such?).
  5. It’s simple to use
  6. Recipes are coded to let you know if it’s prepped fresh or ahead of time.
  7. Easily swap meals with another meal from the app or your own recipe.
  8. Add all recipe ingredients with one tap
  9. Sync to Apple Health to automatically include what’s eaten in your daily food journal.
  10. We heard from people that lead busy lives – picking up the kids, getting time in for the gym, commuting, socializing, etc. Any healthy eating app we would release would need to be sensitive to time spent in the kitchen – preparing nearly a week’s worth of healthy meals in under two hours was our goal.
BAD :
  1. More sorting option for the recipes is preferrable
  2. Design in the recipe part could be improved (esp. the steps)
  3. Overall design is a bit boring.
  4. Limited recipe options
  5. Texts can be too small for some people
  6. Shopping list was a tad confusing
  7. Individual recipe ingredients are not provided in common household measures like ½ cup. Awkward measures like 0.7 ounces rolled oats or 1.7 ounces banana, for example, make the recipes difficult to use without a scale.

User research (interview)

  1. It’s a hassle to find recipe
  2. It’s not tasty but healthy
  3. Meal prepping had helped me in achieving the goal
  4. Stopped because it’s a hassle (and have attained the goal)
  5. Did it for one year “It was fun at first”
Input :
  1. Ingredients will be better with picture
  2. How to cook is important
  3. Budget is important
“Exercise is 70% food”

Comments found in youtube

"I like the simple recipes that are like 4 or 5 ingredients"

"This takes away all my anxiety about meal prepping for the first time this weekend exactly what I needed!! On a side note is there any possibility of integrating with myfitnesspal? I religiously keep track of my calories and macros there and it would be great for certain custom recipes to just import macros from myfitnesspal."

"The swap feature is my favorite thing about it."

"amaziiiing!! :) Is there a way to set the plans to be more plant based? :)"
