Week 1

Instructions

Brainstorm and interpret the theme 'Vision'. What does the theme means to you.

Work Processes

For our first assignment we were given the theme "vision". Vision has a lot of different meanings. First thing that comes into my mind is the most literal version of it : the ability to see. We humans and most creatures were gifted with the ability of sight. Our eyes is a powerful tool which allows to see what is directly in front of us.

A vision can also mean a beautiful sight - something so beautiful it makes us mesmerized. This can be in the form of scenery, a person, or something which pleases the eye.

Another meaning is a dream or trance. The most obvious example for me are the visions found in the Bible, where God speaks to His people through dreams. Commonly however, dreams are what we see during our sleep. For me, my dreams are usually kind of crazy and I take delight in the creativity and randomness of it. Once I found myself in a gigantic waterpark, doing who knows what, running away from sharks and climbing very tall ladders. Another time I found myself in a completely eerie version of my school, where monsters were kept in the basement and the top most stair is broken midway.

Vision is an idea, a vivid mental image and a spark of imagination.

Lastly, I'd like to see vision as a plan for the future. It's the ability to see before it happens. It's fueled by the power of imagination to time travel and see what our desired future would be like. It serves as a motivation and inspiration and it helps us to navigate and shape our lives. This actually reminded me of the animation movie "Up", where Carl and Ellie dreamt of having a house in Paradise falls. A supernatural perspective of this is like the one in Final Destination, where the main character was able to see into the future and prevented death from happening.

Researching and brainstorming
Below I jotted down some keywords that's related to the theme vision, the first few were made spontaneously, the others were thought upon after researching.

Then, I made a mindmap which helps to clarify the keywords I jotted down.

Here you can see that I also include the negative side of vision, when vision fails. Keywords include clouded vision, blindfolded, blind, darkness, confused and lost. I think this is a problem faced by most people, including me. I used to not know what major am I going to take, my life is filled with doubts and sometimes I just don't have a clear direction.

Lastly, I made a moodboard consisting a series of images which I think describes vision.

1. The ability to see. The rainbow kind of adds an optimistic and dreamy feel to it.
2. Firework, reminds me of the phrase "A spark of imagination"
3. Imagination can take you anywhere, it is a path to freedom from daily restraints.
4. Describes how vision can be powerful that it can shape our life.
5. Glasses and vision. Glasses can clarify our blurry vision.
6. Flashlight gives a sense of direction and light through the darkness
7. A screenshot from "Up" with their vision of a house on Paradise falls.
8. Directional sign of success and failure. Building your vision can garner success.
9. A gps. Again, with the directional thing.
10. Vision as an idea.

After all of the brainstorming I think I will stick with these main concepts :
1. Vision as an ability to see before things happen, to see the future
2. Our mind is a powerful thing, our imagination is a path to freedom
3. Or perhaps delve deeper into the negative side where one lacks vision and direction.

Week 2 -Feedback and Consultation

Mr Martin saw the buddha quote in my mood board and told me that it could be interesting if I could somehow implement it into my story. Then, I told him that I think I'm leaning more on the supernatural side of vision such as the ability to see the future and how imagination can take us anywhere. He told me to write this down and develop more on my idea.

Week 3 - More brainstorming

This week, I started thinking about the possible stories and concept around the theme "vision". Here are some :

1. A girl woke up from a bad dream about someone (who she never met before) kidnapping her and was about to harm her. She then actually met the person in real life. Turns out he/she is a distant cousin/ a mysterious loner classmate who she never noticed before / a new student / the boyfriend of her best friend. He/she turns out to be nice but on a walk together alone/ a ride together, he/she appears to be danger.

2. Guy goes out for a jog, got lost. He then opens up his GPS app to guide him back home but he was led to a house in the middle of the neighbourhood instead. Due to a strange pull and curiosity, he goes into the house and was welcomed by a group of people. The next day, he goes back to the place to retrieve a forgotten item. However, upon arriving, he saw that the house turns out to be abandoned for a long time and has a "for sale" sign on it. (Like turns out the people there were ghosts).

3. A more comedic story : Main character sees a TV ad about the chair which can take you anywhere you want. Suddenly the bell rings and the tv ad continues playing saying 1 lucky person will be sent one free product. The main character goes to the door and is greeted by a messy looking delivery guy carrying a dilapidated package. He/she takes it anyway and unpacks the package to find the 'imagination chair' which can take you anywhere you want.

4. A sick bedridden person imagines herself healthy and having fun before snapping back to reality.

5. The anywhere door. Similar to the imagination chair. Main character would be someone who wants to be free of the restraints of life, stepping into the future he/she desires.

6. Main character is an ungrateful teenager. One day, he/she got a vision where he/she suddenly got old (time skip to the future). There, he/she sees his/her miserable future and learns something from it.

7. Designer's struggle

Designer/ design student facing impending deadline (which is the next day but he/she hasn't done anything yet because of procrastinating). After being stressed out because no good idea came to mind, he/she goes to make the creative juice (literal presentation) which he/she ingested. After ingesting the juice the mind's "light bulb" (literal presentation too) goes on and the student/designer starts working. The clock continues ticking and the student is nearly done with his work when the program crash/ there's a blackout.

7. Reminiscing

A lone guy sits alone in a cafe. He saw his ex and her new boyfriend pass by through the window. He then closes his eyes and reminisce the time they had together. When he's done having flashbacks he opens his eyes and saw his ex sitting directly in front of him smiling. He's surprised but when he tries to touch her she disappears (turns out she's just a figment of his imagination). The story ends with him having a fateful encounter with a new girl.

9. The teacher is handing out test results to the class. One student nervously awaits for his test result to be handed out to him. The teacher passes by his row and passes his paper and there it is, an A+! The student got excited and celebrated it in glee. Time passes by and he sees his life pass by in a flash, he gets into a prestigious university, opens up a company and be successful. However, all of that turns out to be just a dream. The student wakes up, drool dripping down his chin. Everyone's looking at him, laughing. He looks down and on his test paper is an F.

Week 3 -Feedback and Consultationn

Mr Martin said most of my stories are more suited for animation and some doesn't make sense. He eventually chose the first one, which I wasn't a fan of because I am not good with the scary stuffs. He told me it'll be good as a challenge. Then he gave me some ideas of how to start the story.

Week 4 - Character, story and more research

First I tried researching about psychopath. Psychopath's brains don't function the same way as normal people, they don't feel sympathy and lacks the feeling of disgust -- which makes them capable of killing people without remorse. However, not all psychopath murders people, characteristics of a psychopath is they're very manipulative, lies often, never admits that they're wrong, and sees others as their possessions.

The crimes can be as worse as murdering, serial killing, raping and torturing people, to cyber bullying stealing, scamming or destroying people's relationship. I also went to read a lot of stories regarding relationship with a psychopath.

In my story there will be 3 characters : the main character, her roommate and her roommate's boyfriend which is probably the psychopath.

Act I
1. Main character woke up after a vision, her being harmed, saw the face of the guy who did it to her.
2. Door bell rings, main character wakes up. Roommate asks her to get the door as she is not done getting ready yet. She tells the MC that it's her boyfriend coming to pick her up.
3. The main character slowly goes to the door and peeps through the peep hole, only to find the person who terrorized her in her dream on the other side. MC becomes terrified and hyperventilates. Roommate notices that MC is taking too long to take the door and decided to open the door herself. MC stops her midway warning her of danger. Roommate dismiss MC and tells her to chill, it's her boyfriend.
4. Roommate opens door and lets Boyfriend in, boyfriend greets happily, bringing flowers. He's charming and good looking. MC feels baffled because he's doesn't act or seem like the violent person in her dream.
5. They get to know and Roommate + Boyfriend left for their date.
6. It's night time, MC's looking at her phone. New notification : Roommate boyfriend's started following her in Instagram. MC opens her Instagram and sees his profile, then look at his story where he is having fun with roommate.

Act II
7. MC sleeps and it's morning. Roommate's not back yet. MC looks at her phone to find any new notification but there's none. She finds it weird because she usually inform her if she's not coming back. Then she's about to get out of bed when she saw a paper slipped from under the door saying bad words like "sl*t" or "Go die". She then received a call from roommate and she told her that she can't take it anymore. She's going to elope with boyfriend to who knows where, seems like someone's been cyberbullying her in internet and threw false accusations on her. Then she hung up mid conversation as if it's being cut off.
8. Someone knocks on the door, but before MC could see who's on the other side the door opens. RM's Boyfriend stood there, with her roommate's access card in his hand. He told her he's going to take some of RM's important stuffs for the "elope" purpose. He took her clothes and money and precious items and shove it into his bag (this time he seems suspicious as he's taking the things like he's robbing them).
9. MC asks why isn't roommate the one taking her own stuff, and ask her whereabout. Boyfriend makes up a believable lie (he's a psychopath so he lies, by this time audience knows something had happened to RM). MC believes this and helps pick up her stuffs, but BF tells her not to touch (feeling possesive?). BF starts to take more things, MC caught a glimpse of BF taking her stuff too and told him "Hey, that's my stuffs".

Act III
10. BF is now triggered and start showing violence. Strangled her and ... like shut her up by drowning her head? More murderous and violent stuffs, MC struggling to get away from psychopath BF before...
11. Suddenly MC sees blood pooling around BF's torso area. BF stops in his action and falls over to the side revealing roommate, panting, knife on her bloody hand, bruises ropes over her body (hinting she was beaten and tied before). Roommate quickly goes closer and hugs MC, consoling her and telling her it's okay.
12. After a moment of silence, she whispered sorry to MC's ear and stab her too (because she witnessed her murdering). Scene ends with close up of MC's hand, blood pooling from it. Fade to black.

Characters :

Main character : not that social, actually jealous of roommate because she has a lot of friends and got herself a loving boyfriend.

Roommate : wretched sense of justice where she plays along with evil people's game before getting the upper hand and kills them.

Boyfriend : Psychopath, dating roommate because he wanted to take advantage of her.

Week 4 -Feedback and Consultation

Mr Martin asked me why would I put a plot twist. He told me plot twists must be believable and for the plot I'm going for it's not working. I was also told that the story's too long. Mr Martin advised me to watch more thriller movies similar to mine and concentrate on the characters first, not the story.

Week 5 - More progress

I went and look for thriller movies to watch. I ended up watching 'sleep tight', a Spanish psychological thriller movie about a man who thinks he doesn't have an ability to be happy, so he aims to make the people around him miserable. He's working as a receptionist in a flat and interacts with the people living in it and fellow worker. From there he starts to plant bits of misery to make the people sad and from here, I learn that there are multiple ways to hurt people (find weak points and attack it). However, one of the tenants named Clara, is a problem for the main character as no matter what ways he tried to make her miserable, Clara is still optimistic and happy. The main character then  went through several mischiefs evil deeds like drugging her during sleep and sleeping with her (to the point where she became pregnant), putting foreign chemicals in her cosmetics, spread cockroach eggs throughout her room (because he found out she hates insects) and killing her boyfriend.

I also went to watch short movies from shortoftheweek.com which are labelled "thriller".

Most of the movies involves the use of a lot of shadows, greenish or cool hues and shaking of camera.

However, after watching and researching all that I am still confused of how I want my character to be. But here is what I came up with.

Main character : comes from a broken family, drops out of school and runs away from home. She ends up living with her best friend (the roommate) who is kind enough to help her. Works part time to fund herself, so that she can move out on her own and fund her own studies. She had a vision about someone harming her in a dream and saw the culprit's face clearly.

Boyfriend of roommate : Has a miserable past, controlled by tiger parents. He's now living alone, actually murdered his parents and staged it as if it's someone else who murdered them. He's smart, athletic and seems very kind. He won a lot of competitions, very much like a model student. However deep down he's scarred. He longs for love and develops an extreme possessive tendency towards his girlfriend, the roommate. He then develops hatred towards the main character because he thinks the main character is burdening his girlfriend and she's spending so much time with main character. He wants his girlfriend to himself only. So perhaps he install hidden cameras in the girlfriend's room, monitors her social media and try to get rid of the main character to a murderous extent.

Girlfriend / roommate : kind girl, pretty, optimistic.

I find it hard to make it so they relate to each other, not from baseless decisions.

MC got a vision

Problem = is the guy good or danger

Resolution = escape, die or cliffhanger (?)

Week 5 -Feedback and Consultation

Mr Martin told me that my latest progress seems like a different story than the previous one. He asks me how does this one make it better than the one before. Actually, I was very confused and in the end I just made up a character with background story, motives and dreams, etc in hope to make the story making easier and clearer. Mr Martin said that it's not about making the character to be complex, but making he/she to be believable. He then offered to fix my story together step by step and he basically

Week 6 - More progress

I made a visual mood board to help me further develop the idea.

SETTING
A living space with living room and separate bedrooms, probably would ask some of my friends who live in the apartments nearby.

CHARACTERS
Sophie (Main Character)
Introverted, vurnerable, shy

Boyfriend of roommate
Two-faced, friendly and evil, charming.

Roommate
Cheerful, outgoing, optimistic

STORY
1. Nightmare scene, Sophie (main character) dreamt of her being tortured and harmed by someone whose face she saw clearly.
2. She woke up terrified but eventually calmed down as it was just a dream. She got out of bed.
3. Door bell rings, Sophie's roommate called out to Sophie to open the door as she's busy.
4. Sophie opens the door and sees the very person who tortured her in her dream. Startled, she instinctively slams the door close and backs away, dropping her phone in the process (but she doesn't notice).
5. The door bell rings a few times again. Roommate, confused why Sophie hasn't opened the door decided to open the door herself.
6. Had an argument, Sophie tried to stop roommate.
7. Roommate still opens the door anyways saying it's her boyfriend.
8. Door opens and boyfriend comes in smiling with flower in hand. They had a lovey-dovey moment.
9. Roommate introduces boyfriend to Sophie, who awkwardly rejected his offer of shaking hands before taking a leave back to her room. (or does Sophie leave when roommate opens the door because she's too scared?)
10. Sophie goes back to her room, still a bit scared. She peeps through her door and saw the lovey-dovey exchange between roommate and her boyfriend.
11. She then saw roommate leave the room (something came up suddenly perhaps), leaving the boyfriend alone in the room.
12. She watches still until she saw boyfriend about to look her way, before she closes the door.
13. Confused of why roommate left, she tried to reach for her phone to ask her (text her) but then her phone is not there. She had dropped her phone in the living room.
14. She peeps back into the living room, saw that the boyfriend is now dancing to a tune he's playing through his phone.
14. Then her phone rings. Sophie closes back the door.
15. The boyfriend notices this. After a while Sophie still hasn't come out yet to get her phone.
16. The boyfriend called out her name several times. Then, decided to deliver the phone to Sophie herself.
17. Sophie waits anxiously as she hears the footsteps of the boyfriend coming nearer to her door room.
18. Boyfriend knocks at the door few times but Sophie still remains quiet.
19. Finally, he just left the phone in front of her room.
20. After Sophie is sure boyfriend is away, distracted with whatever he is doing. Sophie slowly opens the door and takes her phone, seeing a miss call from her... classmate. At the same time, her classmate called back asking for assignment but Sophie ended the conversation fast saying it's not the right time (as she's in dire situation).
21. Sophie then reads a text from her roommate saying she will be gone for a while to take a delivery downstairs.
22. She texts her back telling her to come back quickly. Then got another message from her saying something else came up (perhaps there's a problem in the delivery, wrong address or package gone missing). So roommate won't be coming back soon.
23. Sophie's frustrated. She then realise her empty stomach, she had to grab something to eat.
24. After mustering up her courage, she goes out of the room slowly and silently, and then settle in the kitchen area.
25. She starts boiling water in the kettle and grabs something quick to eat like a cookie. While doing this she sparingly shot some timid glances towards the boyfriend.
26. Boyfriend then coughs, taking out his handkerchief and covering his mouth with it.
27. Sophie recalls the same handkerchief being used to gag her/tie her in her nightmare. Startled, she drops the thing she's holding (perhaps a spoon she's using to stir or take some food), gaining a confused glance from the boyfriend.
28. She then hurriedly take her breakfast (whatever she's prepared) and goes back to her room, scared.
29. She enters her room, locks her door for security, places her breakfast down and checks for any new message from roommate, hoping she'll come back soon but then her phone ran out of battery. Sophie half threw her phone on the bed in frustration before she goes and anxiously search for her charger in her messy room.
30. The water in the kettle is boiling already and it's giving out a lot of steam. (Sophie forgot to turn it off)
31. The boyfriend saw the steaming kettle and knocks on Sophie's door, telling her that the kettle is boiling already. After knocking several times, still no answer, he continued asking, "Hey, are you okay?". (Sophie's still rummaging around her room searching for charger)
32. Sophie then tells him that she's fine and asked him to turn it off for her > with a rather scared voice before finally finding her charger.
33. The boyfriend added that he'll go out for a while to look for roommate, which garnered no response from her. Boyfriend shrugs and goes away, shutting off the gas and then goes out.
34. Sophie, after hearing the sound of the door closing (signalling boyfriend leaving), peeps out of her room and scans the empty living room.
35. After ensuring that the boyfriend has left already, she quickly packs her belongings, wanting to leave the place as soon as possible. She goes out of her room and goes to the toilet to relieve herself.
36. As she's finishing up, she heard a knock on the toilet door (or a door opening hinting someone's going into the room).
37. Sophie freezes and then timidly calls out her roommate's name like "Clara?". But there's no response and everything's silent.
38. Thoroughly creeped out, she quickly finish her toilet business (like pulling her pants up) peeps out of the toilet door, and after seeing no one's there she quickly goes back to her room to take her belongings.
39. As she's about to enter her room, over the shoulder shot of boyfriend sneaking up to her from behind.
40. Torture scene, with flashbacks to the nightmare.
41. Ending is main character dead. Or cliffhanger...? Or like a shot of main character being tortured from the point of view of behind the door (like someone peeping from the main door > probably the roommate) and then the door closes and end.

Another idea : roommate is also a victim and when main character goes back from toilet business she sees  her dead body on the floor. So main character approaches the body and then comes the boyfriend with blood hands and weapon. After this starts torture scene?

Another idea : when she packs her belonging main character brought a cutter with her for security purpose (perhaps put it in her pants pocket). This will help her run away later. Then perhaps main character could attack the boyfriend with the boiling water from kettle.

Feedback

Mr Martin said that my composition is good. However, in some parts the flow is bad like the flashbacks of the guy's face after the main character opens the door. He said I need to start to do my digital storyboard because it would be clearer that way, taking into the account perspectives and the real layout of the setting.

Reflections

Looking back I learn that I have learnt a lot. Now I have a grasp of how to make better stories. I could say my initial story ideas were crap. I also find it fun during the overall shooting process with the exception of troubling lots of people.
